Turnout in J&K first phase 58.97% in largely peaceful polls, says poll panel

NEW DELHI – Voter turnout in Jammu & Kashmir for the 1st phase of Assembly polls was seen 58.97% amid largely peaceful polling with no report of any untoward incident, the poll panel said.

Voting in the first phase of the three-phase Jammu and Kashmir polls in 24 Assembly constituencies across seven districts today started at 0700 IST with voters queueing up in sizable numbers at polling booths since morning.


Elections in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir are being held for the first time since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. The highest percentage of polling was recorded at Inderwal constituency at 80.06%, while the lowest turnout was at Tral at 40.58%. A total of 219 candidates are in the fray in the first phase, which has about 2.3 mln voters, according to the poll panel.


The constituencies covered in this phase are Pampore, Tral, Pulwama, Rajpora, Zainapora, Shopian, DH Pora, Kulgam, Devsar, Dooru, Kokernag, Anantnag West, Anantnag, Srigufwara-Bijbehara, Shangus-Anantnag East, Pahalgam, Inderwal, Kishtwar, Padder-Nagseni, Bhadarwah, Doda, Doda West, Ramban, and Banihal.


A total of 14,000 polling staff have been deputed to oversee the elections at the 3,276 polling stations.


The second phase of polling in the Union territory will be held on Sep 25 and the third on Oct 1, while the results will be declared on Oct 8. Prominent candidates in the first phase include the Communist Party of India (Marxist)'s Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, Congress General Secretary Ghulam Ahmad Mir, National Conference's Sakina Itoo, People's Democratic Party's Sartaj Madni and Abdul Rehman Veeri and Bharatiya Janata Party's Sofi Mohammad Yousuf.
