New Cabinet committees take shape; PM in 6, Shah in all 8

NEW DELHI – Nearly a month into office, the Narendra Modi government today constituted eight key Cabinet committees to deliberate and decide on important policy issues related to different sectors, such as security, economy and senior appointments.

The newly constituted committees are: Cabinet Committee on Security, Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs, Cabinet Committee on Accommodation, Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs, Cabinet Committee on Investment and Growth and Cabinet Committee on Employment and Skill Development.

While Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on six committees, Home Minister Amit Shah has found a place in all the eight. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is on six and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is on seven committees.

Apart from Modi, Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, and Sitharaman, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs includes Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Panchayati Raj Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh.

There was no change in the composition of the Cabinet Committee on Security, which comprises of Modi, Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Sitharaman and Jaishankar. There was no change in the panel on appointments also with Modi and Shah as members. The committee decides all important appointments in the government from the rank of joint secretary and above.

The committee on Parliamentary Affairs includes Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Sitharaman, Health and Family Welfare Minister J.P. Nadda, Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Virendra Kumar, Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu, Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, and Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil. End
