MUMBAI – The cost of a home-cooked vegetarian thali rose 10% on year in June, while that of a non-vegetarian thali declined 4% on year, CRISIL's Market Intelligence and Analytics said in a release today.

On a yearly basis, the cost of a vegetarian thali increased because of a surge in vegetable prices, especially those of onions, tomatoes, and potatoes. The prices of tomato, potato, and onion rose 30%, 59%, and 46%, respectively, which was mainly because of the low base last fiscal, the release said.

According to the consumer affairs department, on Thursday, the daily average retail price of tomatoes was 57.11 rupees a kg, down 26.18 rupees from a year ago. Prices of onions were 42.63 rupees a kg, 17.5 rupees higher from a year ago, and those of potatoes were 35.01 rupees a kg, up 11.95 rupees from last year.

Prices rose because of lower onion arrivals due to a significant drop in rabi acreage, the decline in yield of the potato crop due to unseasonal rainfall in March and virus infestation of the tomato summer crop due to high temperatures in key growing regions of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh that pushed tomato arrivals down 35% on year, the report said.

Further, a 13% on-year increase in rice prices has also contributed to the increase in the overall price of a vegetarian thali. Rice accounts for 13% of the cost of a vegetarian thali, it said. Prices of pulses also rose this year due to lower production. Pulses account for 9% of the vegetarian cost, it said.

The cost of the non-vegetarian thali declined due to an estimated 14% on-year drop in prices of broilers on the high base of last fiscal, the release said. The cost of broilers accounts for 50% of the cost of the thali.

However, the cost of both veg and non-veg thalis increased, by 6% and 4% on month, respectively, the report said. The cost of veg thali rose on month mainly due to a rise in vegetable prices, with prices of potato, onion and tomato rising 9%, 15% and 29%, respectively, due to lower arrivals. The cost of non-veg thali also rose due to increased vegetable prices and also because of 1% on-month increase in the cost of broiler.

"The average cost of preparing a thali at home is calculated based on input prices prevailing in north, south, east, and west India. The monthly change reflects the impact on the common man's expenditure. The data also reveal the ingredients (cereals, pulses, broilers, vegetables, spices, edible oil, and cooking gas) driving the change in the cost of the thali," CRISIL's Market Intelligence and Analytics said.
