AAP picks Atishi as Delhi's next CM; Kejriwal to resign later today

Informist, Tuesday, Sep 17, 2024

NEW DELHI – The Aam Aadmi Party legislators in a meeting today chose Atishi as the next chief minister of Delhi, two days after Arvind Kejriwal announced that he would step down from the position. Kejriwal is expected to tender his resignation to Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena later today.

AAP's members of legislative Assembly unanimously chose Atishi, who currently holds multiple portfolios including finance and education, as the next chief minister after Kejriwal proposed her name at the meeting.

The Supreme Court on Friday granted Kejriwal interim bail in the Delhi liquor policy case being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation. However, the apex court said Kejriwal will not visit the office of the chief minister and the Delhi Secretariat, and will not sign official files unless necessary and will have to obtain the lieutenant governor's approval for the same.

Kejriwal had said on Sunday that he would demand an early election for Delhi in November, which is supposed to be held in February next year. He said he will accept the chief minister's post only if the people of Delhi certify his honesty in the upcoming Assembly elections. Kejriwal has been the chief minister of Delhi since 2015 after winning two consecutive terms. End
