NEW DELHI – GST Appellate Tribunals are likely to be operational from October or November, a senior finance ministry official said. "Preparations are in advanced stages. Approvals are in place, appointments are mostly done, and the infrastructure is also set," the official told Informist.

According to internal targets, the government wanted the appellate tribunals to be functional from September, but a lot of work was disrupted during the General Election, the official said. The General Election stretched from Apr 19 to Jun 4.

"The GSTATs should be operational from October but due to festivities, they may get delayed into November. Central and state governments want them to be operational at the earliest," the official said.

On May 6, former chief justice of Jharkhand High Court Sanjaya Kumar Mishra had taken oath as the first president of the GST Appellate Tribunal principal bench. The appellate tribunal consists of the principal bench in Delhi and 31 state benches. The GST Appellate Tribunals will act as the second appellate authority within the GST framework to hear appeals against the orders passed by the appellate authority.

"The establishment of the GST Appellate Tribunal would further enhance the effectiveness of the GST system in India and foster a more transparent and efficient tax environment in the country," the ministry had said earlier.

The GST Council had decided to set up GST Appellate Tribunals in 2023. End
