Congress questions government's stance on legal guarantee for MSP

Informist, Friday, Jul 26, 2024

NEW DELHI – The Congress today questioned the government's stance on bringing a law making legal guarantee for minimum support price. The Congress members, during the question hour, in the Rajya Sabha asked Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan that whether the government was taking any step to bring out a law guaranteeing MSP for all crops.

The agriculture minister said in the Upper House that the government was waiting for the report of the committee it had constituted in 2022 to make MSP more effective and transparent. Chouhan also reiterated that the government will procure 100% of masur, urad and tur varieties of pulses. He asserted that the Narendra Modi government has made highest procurement of crops under the MSP from farmers and criticised the Congress for politicising the issue.

However, the Congress members were adamant on their demand for legal guarantee on MSP and protested in the Rajya Sabha against the government for not clearing its stand. As the disruptions continued, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar asked Congress member Randeep Surjewala to withdraw from the house. Dhankar also lauded a question asked by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagham member M. Shanmugam seeking MSP for tea and coffee.

"It is a long-pending demand that tea and coffee should be added in the essential commodity because there is no MSP for them. The planters are demanding this," the DMK member said. Chouhan responded that MSP is granted on 23 crops and tea and coffee are handled by the commerce & industry ministry. The chairman asked Chouhan and Commerce & Industry Minister Piyush Goyal to deliberate on the issue and apprise the house about the steps taken on this aspect.

The proceedings in Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha were marred by the face-off between the treasury benches and opposition. Both the houses witnessed adjournment of proceedings due to uproar by the members from both the sides. End
