Onion price falls by 5 rupees/kg after sale at subsidised rate, says govt

NEW DELHI – The price of onions fell by at least 5 rupees per kg after the government started retail sales of the vegetable at a subsidised rate, the consumer affairs ministry said today. The government began retail sales of onions at 35 rupees per kg in Delhi and Mumbai on Sep 5 when all-India average retail price of the commodity was 49.30 rupees per kg.

The price of onion cooled down to 55 rupees per kg on Friday from 60 rupees per kg on Sep 5 in Delhi. Similarly, in Mumbai, the price fell to 56 rupees per kg from 61 rupees per kg. In Chennai, the price of onion dropped by 7 rupees to 58 rupees per kg on Friday.

"The Department of Consumer Affairs is also working closely with state governments to ensure a targeted and steady supply, based on evolving supply-demand conditions and price trends," the ministry said. "The ultimate goal of the government is to ensure that every household across the country has access to affordable onions."

The government has onion buffer stock of 470,000 tn, higher than 305,000 tn procured last year, the ministry had said on Sep 5. The government also recently removed the minimum export price of $550 per tn on onions and cut the export duty to 20% from 40%. End
