MUMBAI – No significant rainfall activity is likely over any part of the country in the next four to five days, the India Meteorological Department said today. So far during the southwest monsoon season, the country has received 873.9 mm rainfall, 7?ove the normal of 817.2 mm, according to the weather agency.

While no significant rainfall is likely in any part of the country, a few pockets of Odisha are likely to receive heavy showers during the weekend, the IMD said. The weather agency also said heavy rainfall is very likely over some parts of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Vidarbha during the next week.

Similar weather conditions are also predicted in pockets of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya next week.

The Met department said a cyclonic circulation lies over southeast Rajasthan and its neighbourhood at lower and middle tropospheric levels. Rainfall activity will, however, decline over most parts of the country in the coming weeks as the southwest monsoon current starts to withdraw. The IMD has forecast that the monsoon is likely to start withdrawal by late September.

Typically, the southwest monsoon starts withdrawing from northwest India around Sep 17. The monsoon current in its last leg typically withdraws from South India around Oct 15, marking the withdrawal from the entire country.

For the southern part, the weather agency predicted hot and humid weather over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal today and Friday. End
