NEW DELHI – The Food Corp. of India along with other state agencies have procured a total of 12.06 million tonne of paddy in Punjab so far in the current crop year that started in July, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs and Food Distribution on Saturday. This is slightly below the total paddy arrivals of 12.7 million tonnes.
Paddy is being purchased at the minimum support price of INR 2,320 per 100 kg, as decided by the government for Grade 'A' paddy. The total paddy purchased by government till date in the ongoing season amounts to INR 280 billion and has benefitted around 658,000 farmers in Punjab, according to the statement. Further, 4,839 millers have applied for shelling of paddy and 4,743 millers have already been allotted work by the Punjab government, it said.
Procurement of paddy for this season commenced in Punjab on Oct. 1. "As many as 2,927 designated mandis and temporary yards are operational throughout the state for smooth procurement from the farmers of Punjab," the government said. The Centre has fixed an estimated target of 18.5 million tonne for paddy procurement in the current year, which will continue up to Nov. 30.
"The paddy lifting from the mandis is in full swing and the paddy lifted is more than the daily arrival quantity," the government said. End
