MUMBAI – Domestic equity indices kicked off the new Samvat year 2078 on a positive note aided by global markets.

The US Federal Reserve on Wednesday announced the expected tapering of its asset purchase programme starting mid-November. However, investors drew comfort that the bank would maintain near-zero interest rates until substantial progress is made on the employment front.

Share indices opened higher and were steady throughout the brief trading session as investors picked their favourite stocks on the auspicious occasion of Diwali.

The Nifty 50 index ended 0.5% higher at 17916.80 points led by gains in the shares of financial and automobile companies. The BSE-Sensex closed at 60067.62, 0.5% higher.

Buying was seen in the broader market as well, with small- and mid-cap indices in NSE ending 0.8-1.5% higher.

On the eve of Diwali the Union government had slashed excise duty on petrol and diesel by 5 rupees and 10 rupees per litre, respectively, and many state governments had followed suit.

Following the cut in the price of diesel, investors accumulated stocks in logistics sector on hope that it would improve the profitability of those companies. Shares of Transport Corp of India, GATI Ltd, Allcargo Logistics, VRL Logistics, and Snowman Logistics ended 2-5% higher.

Nifty Auto was the top gainer among sectoral indices, led by Eicher Motors' stock. The stock surged over 6% on strong September quarter earnings.
