MUMBAI – Benchmark indices closed higher for the second straight session tracking the positive sentiments in the global markets. Similar to Thursday, all sectoral indices pushed the benchmarks higher today.

On Wednesday, the US Federal Reserve kept its key interest rate unchanged for the second time in a row at 5.25-5.50%. While Fed Chair Jerome Powell had not ruled out the possibility of a rate hike in December, the economic data released on Thursday in the US sparked hopes of the Fed not increasing rates this year.

On Thursday, a decline in labour cost led to the view that inflation is under control and a rise in weekly unemployment claims for the week ended Saturday also helped cement the view that the Fed might not increase rates in December.

"We are seeing a positive impact of the US Fed's decision on markets. They have clearly ruled out a rate hike in a sense, which is visible in gains in markets," said Narendra Solanki, head of equity research, Anand Rathi.

Mirroring the global markets, Nifty 50 ended 0.5% higher at 19230.60 points and Sensex ended 0.4% higher at 64363.78 points. Both benchmark indices rose after having ended lower for the past two weeks and gained nearly 1% this week.

Shares of ICICI Bank, Infosys, and HDFC Bank contributed the most to Nifty 50's gain. Among Nifty 50 companies, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone were the top gainers as they ended 5.5% and 2.7% higher, respectively. Bajaj Finserv, on the other hand, ended 2.5% lower and was the worst hit stock on the index.

The market saw a lot of stock-specific action today due to earnings announcements by various companies, such as Godfrey Phillips, Aditya Birls Capital, MRF, Bayer Cropscience, and Prism Johnson.

Shares of Nifty 50 constituent, Titan, ended 2.3% higher. The company's net profit for the quarter was 9.40 bln rupees, higher than 8.57 bln rupees a year ago and analysts' expectation of 8.18 bln rupees. Total income was at 117.82 bln rupees against 87.90 bln rupees in the year-ago period.

All sectoral indices gained this week and, amongst them, Nifty Realty was the clear outperformer, gaining over 10%.
