MUMBAI – Benchmark indices closed higher for the second straight session today with the Nifty 50 ending above the 18700 mark and Sensex gaining more than 400 points.

The Nifty 50 closed 0.6% up today at 18716.15 while the Sensex ended 0.7% higher at 63143.16 points.

"Markets edged higher and gained over half a percent, tracking upbeat global cues," Ajit Mishra, senior vice-president, technical research, Religare Broking, said in a note. Mishra recommended keeping a positive tone without going overboard.

Earlier, both indices opened in the green, tracking positive cues from Wall Street as well as from the CPI inflation and Index of Industrial Production data released on Monday.

The midcap and smallcap indices on the NSE also ended in the green.

Among sectoral indices, the upturn was led by the Nifty Realty index, which ended 3% higher. It was followed by Nifty Media, which ended 1.8% higher, and Nifty Consumer Durables and Nifty FMCG, both of which ended 1.4% higher.

Among Nifty 50 stocks, Tata Consumer Products was the top gainer. The shares of the fast-moving consumer goods company ended 2.4% higher, snapping a three-day losing run.

It was followed by Cipla, Asian Paints and Titan Co, all ending 2.1-2.2% range.

Among other stocks, shares of MRF ended 1% higher today after hitting a lifetime high of 100,439.95 rupees on the National Stock Exchange. The Chennai-based tyre manufacturer has become the first listed company in the country to hit the six-digit mark.

Shares of DLF ended 2.7% up after surging to 504.75 rupees, their highest level since Oct 23, 2009.

Angel One’s Osho Krishan said consolidation took place at higher levels today. “However, there was no notable index-specific movement," he said.

Nifty Auto was the only sectoral index to end in the red, closing the session 0.1% down.

Among Nifty 50 stocks, Kotak Mahindra Bank was the top loser, ending 1.3% down. It was followed by shares of Adani Enterprises and HCL Technologies, which closed 0.9% and 0.7% down, respectively.

Among other stocks, shares of Zee Entertainment Enterprises ended 0.5% down after falling nearly 7% to a fresh two-week low of 182 rupees after the Securities and Exchange Board of India barred the company's Chief Executive Officer Punit Goenka and Chairman Emeritus Subhash Chandra from holding directorial or key managerial positions in any listed company or its subsidiaries until further directions.
