MUMBAI – Prices of mill-quality wheat declined today in the key markets of Kota in Rajasthan and Indore in Madhya Pradesh, traders said. Maize prices were flat in the market of Davanagere, Karnataka.

WHEAT prices fell across Indore and Kota after the government took a slew of measures on Friday, such as increasing the e-auction quantity to 400,000 tn from 300,000 tn and reducing the stock limit for wholesalers and traders to 1,000 tn from 2,000 tn, to improve availability.

In Indore, prices of the grain fell by 25 rupees to 2,525 rupees per 100 kg, while arrivals remained steady at 2,000 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), said local trader Jitendra Panwar.

Prices of wheat fell slightly by 5 rupees to 2,425 rupees per 100 kg in Kota, Rajasthan. The arrivals increased by 2,000 bags to 10,000 bags, said local trader Aniket Mehta.

The US Department of Agriculture, in its December estimates, has kept India's wheat production and consumption estimates unchanged at 110.55 mln tn and 108.65 mln tn, respectively. It has also kept the closing stock unchanged from last month's projection at 11 mln tn.

MAIZE prices in Davanagere were flat at 2,000-2,350 rupees per 100 kg with arrivals at 2,000 bags, said local trader Shiva Kumar. At the lower end, prices of maize have remained largely flat since November. Unlike in other states, maize prices in Karnataka are above the minimum support price as the moisture content in the state's maize is comparatively less, Kumar said.

The daily average consumer wholesale price for RICE fell by 44.06 rupees today to 3,808.82 rupees per 100 kg from the previous day, according to the consumer affairs department.
