NEW DELHI – Wheat prices fell in Kota and Indore today because of subdued demand due to extension of the free ration scheme, while prices of maize rose in Davanagere in Karnataka on the back of strong demand, traders said.

* Prices of mill-quality WHEAT fell today in Kota, Rajasthan, as the government's decision to extend a scheme for free grains to the poor may affect demand for the commodity in the spot market, said local trader Aniket Mehta.

* Arrivals were pegged at 50,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), up 20,000 bags from the previous day of trade.

* On Saturday, the Union Cabinet approved the extension of the free food plan for another six months till September 2022, at an additional cost of 800 bln rupees. This will be the sixth phase of the free ration scheme.

* Prices of wheat in Madhya Pradesh's Indore also fell today amid weak demand due to extension of the free ration scheme, local trader Jitendra Panwar said.

* Arrivals were pegged at 25,000 bags, down 5,000 bags from the previous day.

* The price of MAIZE in Davanagere, a major market in Karnataka, rose today due to strong demand from local stockists and bulk buyers, said Chandrasekhar Babu, a local trader.

* Arrivals were estimated at 600 bags (1 bag = 65 kg), largely unchanged from the previous day of trade.

* Maize prices in Purnea, Bihar, remained flat today as arrivals were sufficient to meet demand, said local trader Kanhaiya Rastogi. Arrivals were at 600 bags, down 200 bags from Friday.

* Prices may fall in April after arrival of the new crop, Rastogi said.

* Prices of BASMATI 1121 PADDY and BAJRA were largely unchanged across markets.
