NEW DELHI – Prices of mill-quality wheat rose in the benchmark markets of Kota, Rajasthan, because of robust demand from stockists and those of maize were stable in the key wholesale markets of Karnataka and Bihar, traders said.

* Prices of mill-quality WHEAT rose for the second consecutive day in Kota on the back of firm demand from stockists despite an increase in arrivals, said Aniket Mehta, a local dealer.

* Arrivals were estimated at 8,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), compared with 6,000 bags on Monday.

* However, prices of mill-quality wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were flat as supply was sufficient to meet demand, said a local trader N.K. Agarwal.

* Arrivals were estimated at 3,500 bags, down by 500 bags from the previous day.

* The area under rabi wheat across the country was at 21.2 mln ha, up 5.4% on year, as of Thursday, according to data released by the farm ministry.

* Extrapolating the increase in acreage to output, a back-of-the-envelope calculation shows the country's wheat output could rise to 118 mln tn this year.

* Prices of MAIZE were unchanged in the key wholesale markets of Davanagere, Karnataka, on account of an increase in the arrivals amid a surge in demand, said Shiva Kumar, a local dealer.

* Arrivals were pegged at 3,000 bags (1 bag = 65 kg), up by 500 bags from Monday.

* Similarly, prices of maize were stable in the benchmark markets of Purnea, Bihar, due to steady demand and supply in the market, said a local trader Kanhaiya Rastogi. Arrivals were steady at 7,500 bags.

* Prices are expected to remain stable for the next 10 days, Kumar said.

* Prices of BASMATI 1121 RICE were stable today, traders said.
