NEW DELHI - Prices of mill-quality wheat were down today in Kota, Rajasthan, after the central government imposed stock limits, traders said. On the other hand, prices of maize were up in Purnea, Bihar.

In Kota, mill-quality WHEAT was sold at 2,125-2,150 rupees per 100 kg, down 50 rupees from Monday, Aniket Mehta, a local trader said. Arrivals were steady at 25,000 bags.

Wheat prices from the benchmark markets of Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were unavailable.

In a bid to curb hoarding and keep prices in check, the government has imposed, with immediate effect, stock limits on wheat till Mar 31 and also announced the release of wheat and rice under its open market ale scheme.

Wheat production in India in 2022-23 (Jul-Jun) is estimated at a record 112.7 mln tn, 4.2% higher than the output of 107.7 mln tn in the previous crop year, according to the government's third advance estimate.

The US Department of Agriculture has projected global production of wheat in 2023-24 at 800.2 mln tn, higher than the 789.8 mln tn estimated in May.

Prices of MAIZE in Purnea rose marginally amid steady arrivals of the grain, said Kanhaiya Rastogi, a local trader. Maize was sold at 1,730 rupees per 100 kg, up 10 rupees from Monday. Arrivals were steady at 2,500 bags.

In Davanagere, Karnataka, maize was sold at 1,950-2,055 rupees per 100 kg, steady from Monday. Arrivals were also steady at 500 bags, Shiva Kumar, a local trader, said.
