NEW DELHI – Agitation by senior opposition leaders entered its second day here Wednesday amid tense exchanges between protestors and the Delhi Police. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, Member of Parliament Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, several members of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, and other protestors were detained by the police near the Jantar Mantar protest site. The police and opposition leaders had a standoff as the latter attempted to march towards the protest site for a flash protest.
Many leaders have alleged physical assault by police personnel as they attempted to move towards the protest site. Vadra staged a lie-down protest and alleged that she was pushed by the cops. The march also saw participation of the Congress-affiliated National Students' Union of India.
Tuesday, the Gandhi siblings and several others were detained after Delhi Police stopped the march near Akashvani Bhawan. The leaders have demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged "vote theft" and irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
The protests followed an investigative report by The Indian Express newspaper, which reported that several decisions on the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls across the country were taken without the knowledge of two of the three election commissioners – Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi – who formally recorded their objections at least 14 times over the past 10 months.
Protests have intensified since last week following allegations by three female reporters of sexual harassment by Delhi Police personnel, including Assistant Commissioner of Police Vivek Bhagat, according to media reports. Authorities have imposed an order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita in Central Delhi. End
