NEW DELHI – The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations on Wednesday said electric vehicle sales in India hit a record high of 333,634 units across categories in September. This was a jump of 74% on year and has increased the electric vehicle penetration to 13% in the mass market.
The highest on-year retail growth was seen by the electric commercial vehicle segment, which sold a total of 4,188 units in September across major manufacturers, registering a year-on-year growth of 158% from 1,622 units in September 2025. The market share of this segment stood at 4.04%, declining slightly on month due to 11% on-month decline in sales.
The electric two-wheeler retail sales grew nearly 89% on year to 207,314 units. TVS Motor Co. Ltd. led the market share, selling 54,037 units, followed by Bajaj Auto Ltd. and Ather Energy Ltd. The market share of this segment rose to 11.6% for the month from 10.7% in August.
The retail sales of electric passenger vehicles rose to 36,108 units, nearly double the 18,559 units sold last year. On a monthly basis, the sales grew nearly 18%. The category also increased its market share to 8.5% in September from 7.6% in August. The highest growth in sales was seen by Vinfast Auto India Ltd., which sold 2,964 units of electric vehicles in September as compared to just six units last year, beating rivals like Kia India Pvt. Ltd., Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., and Hyundai Motor India Ltd.
Tesla India Motors and Energy Pvt. Ltd.'s retail sales grew over four times to 291 units in September. Sequentially, its retail sales grew over two-and-a-half times from 116 units sold in August.
In terms of number of units, the retail electric passenger vehicle sales were led by Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., which doubled its sales to 14,791 units in September. Sequentially, its sales rose over 12%. Mahindra & Mahindra sold 7,780 units of electric passenger vehicles, nearly double from 3,973 units it sold last year.
The total sales of electric three-wheelers rose 40% on year and 8% on month to 86,024 units in September. Bajaj Auto maintained its top spot with more than double growth on year and over 9% growth on month, selling 15,109 units. However, despite being the top contributor in the EV segment, the three-wheeler segment had 64.9% of market share, losing around 40 basis points on month.
"...unlike the broader market, where September's headline is flattered by a weak year-ago base, the EV (electric vehicle) number is a clean, absolute record. Electric vehicles did not merely grow against last year — they set a new all-time high. And the record was led from the mass market," FADA President Sai Giridhar said in a statement.
The on-year growth in electric commercial vehicles came as operators deepen fleet electrification, Giridhar said, adding that multiple factors like festival demand, lower running costs, and government's policy support are turning electric vehicle adoption into a default consideration. "This is no longer a subsidy-led story; it is a demand-led one," Giridhar added. End
