NEW DELHI – India's foreign exchange reserves fell $12.96 billion in the week ended Friday to $734.60 billion, the Reserve Bank of India said Wednesday. "India's foreign exchange reserves continue to remain adequate in terms of the standard metrics of reserve adequacy with import cover of around 11 months and external debt cover of 94.4%," RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said.

In the week ended Friday, the rupee fell around 0.5% against the dollar. The decline in the Indian unit was despite the central bank selling dollars to contain its depreciation, which led to the fall in foreign exchange reserves.

Calculated in dollar terms, the RBI's foreign exchange reserves also reflect the impact of the appreciation or depreciation of currencies other than the dollar, such as the euro, the pound sterling, and the yen, which the central bank holds.  End
