NEW DELHI – Global central banks continued to accumulate gold in August, with a reported net purchase of 39 tonnes amid heightened economic and geopolitical uncertainty. China led with a 20-tonne purchase in August, followed by Uzbekistan and Poland at eight tonnes each, the World Gold Council said. On a year-to-date basis, central banks reported total purchases of 170 tonnes.

"In its 22nd consecutive month of buying, The People's Bank of China added 20t to its gold reserves in August," it added. On a year-to-date basis, the National Bank of Poland topped the scoreboard with 98 tonnes, but China is catching up with 80 tonnes, the report said. China's total gold reserves now stand at 2,387 tonnes and Poland at 648 tonnes.

"The composition of August's buying is as notable as the headline total: demand was again led by familiar participants pursuing multi-year accumulation programmes," Marissa Salim, senior research lead, APAC, said in the report. "This suggests that central bank activity continues to reflect longer-term reserve objectives, while monthly fluctuations are more likely to capture differences in implementation, market conditions and country-specific liquidity requirements."

Meanwhile, the Central Bank of Uzbekistan bought around 50 tonnes gold so far in 2026. The National Bank of Kazakhstan bought seven tonnes of the precious metal in August, and 36 tonnes in 2026. "A consistent buyer of gold for the past 42 consecutive months, the Czech National Bank also bought 2t of gold in August," the report said. Gold reserves of Uzbekistan are now about 439 tonnes and Kazakhstan 377 tonnes.

After three consecutive months of net sales, Turkey's central bank emerged as a net buyer with three tonnes in August. Meanwhile, Russia continued its net sales, offloading another six tonnes in August. Russia has sold 56 tonnes gold so far in 2026, and its total holdings are now at 2,271 tonnes. End
