NEW DELHI – The finance ministry is working on a faceless assessment scheme for companies registered under the Central Goods and Services Tax, a senior finance ministry official said Tuesday. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs is working out the details of the scheme, which is likely to be launched in the next four to five months, the official said.
"The scheme will be launched by the Centre for only companies registered under CGST. Later, states will be free to implement the same," the official said. "We are creating the architecture," the official added.
Faceless Assessment Scheme is designed to make tax assessments more technology-driven and transparent, while reducing direct interaction between taxpayers and tax officers. The scheme will follow the same concept used for income-tax assessments. Under the current income-tax framework, eligible assessments are handled electronically through a centralised system, with cases allocated through an automated process. The objective is to promote objective assessment and reduce unnecessary personal interaction, the official said.
The indirect tax department has been increasing its use of technology in GST. The GST Council is scheduled to meet Thursday, with the council, led by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, expected to introduce a range of changes to GST processes, including registration, returns, refunds, and litigation. Each change will involve greater use of technology to make the GST ecosystem simpler and more efficient for businesses. End
