MUMBAI – Benchmark stock indices ended appreciably higher Tuesday, extending gains for the second session in a row, after remaining range-bound with a positive bias for most of the session. Amid news related to steady oil supply from West Asia, December futures of crude oil slipped below the $100 per barrel level. Favourable quarterly updates helped drive stock-specific outperformance during Tuesday's session. Investors will look forward to commentary by the Reserve Bank of India during its policy announcement Wednesday.

After settling 0.7% higher post the continuous trading session, the Nifty 50 touched an indicative close of 23017.90 points or 2% higher at 1520 IST. Subsequently, the 50-stock index settled 1% higher at 22776.10, up 220.35 points, and the BSE Sensex closed 1% higher at 73067.81, up 685.34 points. The gains in the indices were broadly in tandem with the fall in crude oil prices. At 1548 IST, December futures of Brent Crude oil were down nearly 2% at $98.61 per barrel. Wednesday, market participants will watch out for commentary by the central bank following its bi-monthly policy announcement. Analysts broadly believe the markets have already priced in a 25-basis point hike in the benchmark repo rate by the Reserve Bank of India. However, hawkish commentary, particularly related to food inflation, could drive downward correction during the trading session.

Shares of Trent ended nearly 13% higher, having breached the 10% upper circuit level at INR 2,838 during the session. This comes after the retail major detailed its provisional business update for the September quarter post market hours Monday. For Jul-Sept, the company's standalone revenue from operations rose 23% on year to INR 57.88 billion from INR 47.24 billion a year ago. The company's revenue from merchandise sales, excluding other operating income, grew 23% on year during the September quarter. The stock ended as the top gainer across the Nifty 50, Nifty 200, and Nifty 500 indices.

Shares of BSE ended nearly 4% higher, as the second-highest gainer in the Nifty 50 amid media reports that the Securities and Exchange Board of India is likely to ‌stop using closing auctions to calculate settlement prices of equity derivatives for at least a year. The regulator is expected to implement the changes by the end of this month. The new approach would align India more closely with US and European markets, where derivatives settlement is often determined using dedicated pricing mechanisms, such as volume-weighted average prices over set trading periods, rather than a single closing auction. Other capital market stocks such as Billionbrains Garage Ventures and Multi Commodity Exchange of India also saw comparable gains, ending 3–4% higher.

Amid other notable Nifty 50 gainers, shares of Kotak Mahindra Bank ended nearly 4% higher after the lender reported 25% on-year growth in its net advances at INR 5.77 trillion as on Sept. 30. The bank follows its peer lenders who have broadly detailed favourable business updates for September. Despite these positive fundamentals, selling by foreign institutional investors is expected to persist in the near term, as investors look to reduce their exposure to Indian equities at large amid currency-related pressures, according to analysts.

Among individual stocks, shares of digital insurance company PB Fintech ended 6% higher, snapping its seven-session losing streak, shedding over 48% during the period. The stock started to fall after the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India proposed limits on commissions and management expenses in its consultation paper mooted towards the end of September.

Among the stocks listed Tuesday, shares of SRIT India hit the upper circuit shortly after listing on the National Stock Exchange at a premium of 14%. The company's initial public offering was solely a fresh issue of up to 16.8 million shares. Ahead of the offer, it raised INR 655.20 million from nine anchor investors.

In the broader market, mid-cap indices broadly reflected the gains in their benchmark peers, ending 1-1.2% higher, while small-cap indices slightly outperformed, ending 1.4-1.6% higher. Most sectoral indices closed higher, with the Nifty Pharma index being the highest gainer, ending nearly 2% higher, supported by gains in nearly all of its constituents. On the other hand, the Nifty IT index ended nearly 1% lower, as the worst performer.
