MUMBAI – The presence of several weather systems over and around south peninsular India is likely to trigger heavy showers over many parts of the region, the India Meteorological Department said. Meanwhile, the line of withdrawal of the southwest monsoon remains in the same position as it was on Saturday. The withdrawal current presently passes through Supaul in Bihar, Ranchi in Jharkhand, Raipur in Chhattisgarh, and Brahmapuri, Parbhani, Baramati, and Harnai in Maharashtra.

An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over the southeast Arabian Sea, off the south Kerala coast, the weather department said. Another upper air cyclonic circulation lies over north Tamil Nadu, and a trough runs from the Gulf of Mannar to central Maharashtra. The presence of these weather systems is likely to cause heavy rainfall over parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Thursday and Friday and over Kerala on Friday and Saturday, the department said. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are forecast over many parts of south peninsular India till Saturday, while thunderstorms and lightning are seen over parts of south interior Karnataka till Wednesday. Strong surface winds are expected over parts of Andhra Pradesh till Thursday.

An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over south coastal Odisha, while a trough runs from southeast Uttar Pradesh to north Bay of Bengal. Under the influence of these weather systems, heavy rainfall is likely over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Thursday, the weather bureau said. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over several parts of east India till Friday, the bureau said. Heavy showers are also likely over parts of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura till Wednesday.

The declaration of monsoon withdrawal depends on the fulfilment of certain criteria, which include the absence of rainfall over the given region for at least a few consecutive days. With the forecast of moderate to heavy showers in many parts of northeast, east, and south India, withdrawal has paused halfway through the country.

A western disturbance acting as a trough lies to the northwest of the country. An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over south Haryana, and another one lies over southeast Uttar Pradesh. These weather systems are expected to cause widespread thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over multiple parts of northwest India till Friday, the weather department said. A wet spell is expected to continue over many parts of the region till Monday.

In central India, a wet spell is likely over most parts till Saturday, and thunderstorms and lightning are expected over parts of east Madhya Pradesh till Wednesday and over Vidarbha till Saturday. In west India, a wet spell is likely to persist over Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra till Wednesday, the department said.  End
