MUMBAI – Delhi has recorded above-normal temperatures so far in October, with mercury soaring up to 37 degrees Celsius. The formation of several weather systems over northwest India is likely to change the wind pattern over the city, lowering maximum temperatures till Sunday, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. These weather systems are also expected to cause light rainfall over parts of the city during the same period, the weather agency said.
According to pentad normals, October begins with a maximum of 33-34 degrees Celsius and ends with a high of 30-32 degrees Celsius, while normal rainfall during the month is 14 millimetres, the weather agency said. Wet spells are recorded over the city when the monsoon withdraws later than usual or when weather disturbances pass across the northern mountains, the weather agency said. The seasonal monsoon trough has already withdrawn from Delhi, and as such, any rainfall or thunderstorms are generally not intense, the agency said.
A western disturbance has formed over the northern Indian hills. A feeble cyclonic circulation is also forming over the border areas of Punjab and Pakistan. A weak east-west trough is likely to stretch from the circulation to the foothills of Uttarakhand and west Uttar Pradesh. These weather systems are expected to be in proximity to Delhi, the weather agency said.
Though most of the weather activity triggered by these weather systems will remain confined to the foothills and adjoining plains of Punjab and Haryana, some light showers may spill over to Delhi. With the change in wind pattern, temperatures will also dip to reach close to normal. The maximum temperature may fall by 3 degrees Celsius and remain between 30 and 35 degrees Celsius for the rest of the week, the agency said. End
