NEW DELHI – The government Monday postponed the 57th GST Council meeting by a day to Thursday, from Wednesday. This is the second time the meeting has been rescheduled. Originally, the meeting was slated for Sept. 12. While the BRICS Summit in New Delhi forced the government to delay the meeting previously, on Wednesday, the Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee will announce its policy decision.
At its meeting Thursday, the GST Council may introduce changes to processes in the goods and services tax structure to aid businesses and boost the ecosystem that small enterprises operate in by simplifying refunds related to the inverted duty structure and supporting investment activities. It may also remove tax officials' power to arrest in relation to GST disputes such as fake invoicing and fake credit.
At the time of introduction, the power of arrest was one of the few tools available against fake invoicing. However, now the invoice matching system links what a seller reports with what a buyer claims, Informist reported earlier Monday.
The apex body of indirect taxation is also likely to take up easing of refund processes for exporters of goods and services. The council may also discuss reducing GST litigation and setting a common standard for how GST demands are raised and decided, remove the smallest disputes from the system, and lower the cost of contesting a demand.
