NEW DELHI – A day after hundreds were detained by Delhi Police, protesters began marching towards Jantar Mantar Saturday, seeking Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation and many were detained on the way. Advocate Prashant Bhushan, political activist Yogendra Yadav, and All India Students' Association's Neha Bora were among those detained by the police during their march towards the protest site. Advocates Kapil Sibal and Nitya Ramakrishnan, as well as activist Anjali Bhardwaj also joined the march, according to several media reports.

The protest is being organised by All India Students' Association, and was joined by Students' Federation of India, Aam Aadmi Party, and Indian National Congress, among others, for the second day in the heart of the national capital. Protesters were seen raising slogans against the government and the administration. Some were even holding placards demanding Kumar's resignation while they sought an explanation in the existing electoral records.

Demonstrators were not allowed to stage a protest due to the imposition of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, prohibiting unauthorised assemblies, processions, sit-ins and sloganeering in the area. Delhi Police said the restrictions are in force across New Delhi district in view of public safety, public order, and facilitate smooth traffic movement.

Unlike Friday, internet services and metro rail services remained operational Saturday in the New Delhi district and the adjoining areas. Bora, Yadav, Aam Aadmi Party Delhi Chief Saurabh Bharadwaj, Delhi's former Chief Minister Atishi, Member of Legislative Assembly Sanjeev Jha and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh were among those detained Friday, the reports had said.

The protests followed an investigative report by The Indian Express newspaper that said several decisions about the special intensive revision of electoral rolls across the country were taken without the knowledge of two of the three election commissioners--Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi--who formally recorded their objections at least 14 times over the past 10 months.  End
