NEW DELHI – India's foreign exchange reserves recorded the sharpest weekly fall of $18.34 billion during the week ended Sept. 25, data released by the Reserve Bank of India Friday showed. The reserves fell to $747.56 billion as on Sept. 25.

The decline was mainly because of a $15.57 billion on-week fall in foreign currency assets at $615.41 billion as of Sept. 25. The value of the central bank's gold holdings also declined $2.59 billion on week to $108.70 billion.

The rupee rose nearly 0.1% against the dollar during the week, supported by the central bank's intervention in the market. The RBI is likely to have conducted dollar-rupee sell-buy swaps in the foreign exchange market in the week ended Sept. 25 after a sharp rise in capital inflows under the RBI's swap schemes. The reserves had hit an all-time high of $785.71 billion in the week ended Sept. 4.

Calculated in dollar terms, the RBI's foreign exchange reserves also reflect the impact of the appreciation or depreciation of currencies other than the dollar, such as the euro, the pound sterling, and the yen, which the central bank holds.  End
