MUMBAI – The Reserve Bank of India said state governments and Union territories will raise about INR 3.61 trillion through bonds in Oct-Dec, according to an indicative calendar released late Thursday.
The central bank had introduced a benchmark issuance strategy for market borrowings of nine states on a pilot basis in the June quarter. Under this strategy, these state governments issued securities in specific benchmark-tenor buckets specified in the calendar. In the September quarter, the central bank added 10 more states, the RBI said.
Based on the experience gained so far and concurrence from nine more states and one Union territory, the RBI has extended the benchmark issuance strategy framework to Assam, Goa, Haryana, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Jammu and Kashmir from the December quarter.
The states that have adopted the benchmark issuance strategy framework will borrow around INR 797.00 billion in October, INR 872.10 billion in November, and INR 1.11 trillion in December, according to the RBI's release. The remaining state governments and Union territories will borrow INR 260 billion in October, INR 270.00 billion in November, and INR 300.00 billion in December.
The auctions will take place weekly. The RBI said it will announce the exact amounts to be borrowed 2-3 days before the auction. End
