NEW DELHI – India recorded 1.4 millimetres of rainfall Thursday, 59% below the normal of 3.5 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. Of the four homogenous regions, east and northeast India received normal levels of rainfall, while northwest and central India reported a large deficiency of rainfall, and the south peninsula region received deficient amount of rain, the data showed.
The weather department said conditions are favourable for the Southwest monsoon to resume withdrawing from many parts of northwest, central, and east India in the next 48 hours. The Southwest monsoon started retreating on Sept. 19 and withdrew from entire Delhi, most parts of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and some parts of Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat last week. However, the progress of the withdrawal has been on a pause as the monsoon current has largely been lying over the same areas since Sept. 24. As of Thursday, the current continued to pass through Chandigarh and Gurdaspur in Punjab, Muzaffarnagar and Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, Dholpur and Udaipur in Rajasthan, and Deesa and Naliya in Gujarat.
East and northeast India received 4.9 millimetres of rain, 14% below the normal of 5.7 millimetres. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura received a large excess of rain at 23.2 millimetres, 252% above the normal of 6.6 millimetres. Four other areas in the region, including parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Bihar, received no rain on Thursday.
Northwest India received 0.1 millimetre rain, 92% below the normal of 0.9 millimetre. Six areas in the region, including parts of Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, and west Rajasthan, received no rain.
Central India received 0.3 millimetre of rain, 90% below the normal of 3.2 millimetres. Three areas in the region, including Gujarat, Marathwada, and Vidarbha, received no rain. Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh, among other regions, received a largely deficient amount of rain ranging between 99-86% below-normal levels.
The southern peninsula region received 2.6 millimetres of rainfall, 59% below the normal of 6.4 millimetres. Tamil Nadu received an excess amount of rain at 6.3 millimetres, 32% above the normal of 4.8 millimetres. Six areas of the region, including coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and parts of Karnataka, received a largely deficient amount of rain, ranging between 94-64% below normal levels. End
