MUMBAI – Indices are expected to remain under pressure amid rising crude oil prices, elevated US bond yields, and a depreciating rupee. Meanwhile, investors expect foreign investors to intensify their selling due to a sharp rise in US bond yields. The Reserve Bank of India's monetary policy meeting will be the key factor for market participants to look out for.
The December futures of Brent crude were over 2% higher at $100 per barrel. The US-Iran war continued to push crude oil prices higher and the war showed no signs of ending or both countries reaching a peace deal anytime soon. The US bond yields rose to the highest level since 2002 to around 5.33%. The expectations of an interest rate hike by the Reserve Bank of India, higher US bond yields, and crude oil above $100 per barrel is keeping the market underp pressure, according to Kranthi Bathini, equity strategist at WealthMills Securities. Foreign investors are expected to intensify the selling of Indian equities amid a sharp surge in the US bond yields, Bathini said. Indian market is now showcasing any factors that will attract overseas capital and it is the major underperformer among the emerging markets.
Foreign institutional investors were net sellers of Indian equities for the fifth consecutive session. Wednesday, investors sold Indian shares worth INR 101.48 billion. Meanwhile, domestic players continued their active participation. They bought equities worth INR 112.72 billion Wednesday. In September, foreign institutional investors offloaded shares worth $3.18 billion. So far in 2026, they sold Indian equities worth $21.28 billion, as per the data from National Securities Depository Ltd.
"Looking ahead, the RBI policy decision will be the key domestic trigger, with pressure to support the rupee and contain imported inflation strengthening expectations of a rate hike," Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said in a note. The Nifty 50 is expected to post losses next week as well as it is in oversold territory, according to technical analysts. "Sentiments continue to remain weak as the index closed below its 200-week moving average for the first time since the Covid crash," Rupak De, senior technical analyst at LKP Securities, said on a note. The support for the 50-stock Nifty index is seen at 22200–22000 levels, while the resistance is seen at around 22500-22600, according to technical analysts.
Shares of HDFC Bank will be in focus Monday after the RBI approved the appointment of Anup Bagchi as India's largest private sector bank's managing director and chief executive officer. Indian equity markets will remain closed on Friday for Gandhi Jayanti. End
