NEW DELHI – Conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon to resume withdrawing from many parts of northwest, central and east India in the next 48 hours, the India Meteorological Department said. The monsoon may retreat from the remaining parts of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. The monsoon current may withdraw from most parts of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, and some parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra during the same period, the weather bureau said.

The southwest monsoon started retreating on Sept. 19 and withdrew from entire Delhi, most parts of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and some parts of Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat last week. However, the progress of the withdrawal has been on a pause as the monsoon current has largely been lying over the same areas since Sept. 24. As of Thursday, the current continued to pass through Chandigarh and Gurdaspur in Punjab, Muzaffarnagar and Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, Dholpur and Udaipur in Rajasthan, and Deesa and Naliya in Gujarat.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall is expected over Kerala from Sunday to Tuesday, and south interior parts of Karnataka on Thursday and Monday, the department said. Northeast India may see heavy rainfall till Friday, the weather body said.  End
