MUMBAI – Net claims of non-residents on India rose by $16.5 billion from the previous quarter to $220.30 billion at the end of June, largely due to a rise in external liabilities by $11.6 billion and a fall in foreign-owned assets by $4.6 billion, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India.

The ratio of India's international assets to international liabilities fell to 84.6% at the end of June from 85.70% a quarter ago, reflecting moderation in growth in overseas assets relative to liabilities. Reserve assets accounted for 55.10% of India's international financial assets at June-end, while overseas direct investment constituted over one-fourth of the total.

The rise in foreign liabilities of Indian residents was mainly on account of direct investment, which rose to $15.7 billion and other investment of $4.20 billion, compensating for the decline in portfolio equity investments of $14.00 billion. The share of debt liabilities in total external liabilities rose gradually during the recent quarter and stood at 56.9% as of June-end.  End
