NEW DELHI – India's external debt stood at $778.2 billion as on Jun. 30, easing to 20.8% of the country's GDP from 20.9% at the end of the financial year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar). On an annual basis, the external debt grew $31.4 billion, or 4.2% on year, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India Wednesday.

Provisional revised data for March-end showed external debt was unchanged at $762.8 billion, indicating that the debt rose by $15.4 billion on an absolute basis in the June quarter. Valuation gains in the US dollar against developed market currencies reduced the increase in India's external debt, the RBI said. If not for the valuation effect, external debt would have increased by $16.4 billion, the central bank said.

Over the next 12 months, India and its institutions have to pay back 43.4% of the outstanding external debt at the end of June. The share of short-term debt on a residual maturity basis has increased from March, when 42.9% of the external debt was maturing within a year's time. Short-term debt on a residual basis rose to 50.3% of foreign exchanges as of Jun. 30 from 47.3% on Mar. 31. According to earlier RBI data, India's foreign exchange reserved were $682 billion as on May 29.

The ratio of short-term debt to overall debt inched up sequentially, especially when compared with India's foreign exchange reserves. Debt with original maturity of up to one year made up 19.7% of the overall debt at end-June, from 19.6% as on Mar. 31. The ratio of short-term debt to foreign exchange reserve rose to 23.0% by Jun. 30 from 21.6% at the end of FY26. Long-term debt, or debt with an original maturity of over one year, made up most of India's external debt. At the end of June, long-term external debt was $624.7 billion, up 2.1% on year.

"US dollar-denominated debt remained the largest component of India's external debt, with a share of 54.8% at end-June 2026, followed by debt denominated in the Indian rupee (29.8%), Yen (6.9%), SDR(4.1%), and Euro (3.5%)," the RBI said in its release.

The general government's external debt rose 3.7% on year to $174.3 billion as on Jun. 30. The outstanding debt from non-government sources rose 4.3% on year to $603.9 billion at June-end, not counting inter-company lending. Loans made up 34.3% of the external debt, followed by currency and deposits at 22.2%, trade credit and advances at 19.1%, and debt securities at 16.5%.

Non-financial corporations owed 36.1% of the total external debt as on Jun. 30, followed by deposit-taking corporations and the general government. Other financial corporations held 10.2% of the external debt. Debt-servicing obligations on the outstanding external debt as of Jun. 30 were 5.6% of current receipts, unchanged from March.  End
