MUMBAI – Benchmark indices ended lower for the third straight session on Wednesday after a volatile run, owing to elevated crude oil prices. Index heavyweight HDFC Bank weighed on the Nifty 50, along with healthcare and pharmaceutical companies. On the other hand, banking stocks performed well in the indices.

The Nifty 50 ended 0.4% lower at 22620.45, and the BSE Sensex closed 0.1% lower at 72480.29. "September was a month of heightened volatility for Indian equities, with the Nifty and Sensex correcting around 6% as elevated crude oil prices, rising global bond yields and persistent FII (foreign institutional investor) selling weighed on sentiment," Agrim Verma, manager at Smallcase, said in a note. The November futures of Brent crude were nearly 0.5% higher at $103.06 per barrel.

Apollo Hospitals Enterprises ended nearly 6% lower, the worst hit in the Nifty 50. The stock ended lower for the third consecutive session and touched a three-month low. Max Healthcare Institute, Cipla, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, and Sun Pharmacuetical Industries ended 2-3% lower. Pharmaceutical stocks fell after posting gains Tuesday. Fast-moving consumer goods companies Nestle India and Tata Consumer Products ended nearly 3% and 2% lower, respectively. HDFC Bank closed nearly 2% lower and weighed on the index. BSE's shares ended over 3% lower on their first day in the Nifty 50. The stock replaced IT behemoth Wipro in the index. Shares of Wipro ended nearly 1% higher.

On the other hand, Kotak Mahindra Bank closed nearly 3% higher, the top gainer in the Nifty 50. InterGlobe Aviation closed over 2% lower. Banking heavyweight ICICI Bank closed over 2% higher and lent the most support to the Nifty 50. Information technology stocks Tata Consultancy Services, Tech Mahindra, and HCL Technologies ended around 1% higher each.

Broader market indices ended mixed. Small-cap indices ended 0.1-0.3% lower, while the Nifty Midcap 50 and Nifty Midcap 100 ended flat. The Nifty Midcap 150 closed 0.1% higher. The broader market indices performed better than their benchmark peers. Among sectoral indices, Nifty Media ended nearly 3% higher, the best performer. Meanwhile, Nifty Healthcare fell nearly 3% to be the underperformer among sectoral indices. Nifty Pharma fell nearly 2%. Fortis Healthcare and Apollo Hospitals Enterprises were the worst hit stocks in both the Nifty 200 and Nifty 500 indices, ending around 6% lower each.

The Nifty IT ended with gains after falling for eight consecutive sessions. The index declined over 5% during these eight sessions. IT stocks gained ahead of US tech giant Accenture's earnings announcement Thursday and amid diminishing expectations of an interest rate hike by the US Federal Reserve in the near term. Expectations of an interest rate hike by the US Fed in October pared following softer-than-expected US labour market data and dovish comments by New York Fed President John Williams suggesting that the central bank need not rush to continue raising interest rates after the September rate hike.

In the Nifty 500, Ircon International ended as the major gainer, up over 14%. The stock rose after falling for four consecutive sessions. During this period, the stock shed nearly 7%. Wednesday, the shares hit a one-month high of INR 122.96. Shares of Sun TV Networks ended over 9% higher in the Nifty 500. The Tamil Nadu-based entertainment company's shares gained after a media report said it was considering demerger of the cricket franchises under the brand Sun Risers. However, later, the company dismissed the media report and termed it "market rumour" in an exchange filing.
