--CONTEXT: PM-DHARA is to develop accelerated renewable energy access
NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Wednesday approved INR 1.864 trillion for the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III scheme under the PM DHARA or Developing Harmonized and Accelerated Renewable Energy Access, initiative. The scheme is targeted to be set up by 2032-33 (Apr-Mar).
The scheme comprises of INR 1.364 trillion for the development of intra-state transmission systems under Green Energy Corridor-III and INR 500 billion for 50 gigawatts of battery energy storage systems. It involves total central financial support of INR 540.82 billion, which will help in offsetting the intra-state transmission charges and, thus, keep power costs lower, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said in a press release.
This initiative will strengthen India's intra-state transmission system to enable evacuation of up to 135 gigawatt of renewable energy across states and Union territories, it said. "The scheme also provides for deployment of 50 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems at the Renewable Energy developer/generator end or any other location of importance for grid flexibility to address intermittency, congestion, peak-hour curtailment and meet non-solar hour demand," it said. The scheme will also facilitate grid integration and power evacuation within states and Union territories.
The scheme will help in achieving the target of 900 gigawatts installed non-fossil capacity by 2035 and contribute to long-term energy security of the country and promote ecologically sustainable growth by reducing carbon footprint, it said. "It will generate large direct & indirect employment in the power sector, manufacturing, and construction industries," it added.
Battery energy storage system manufacturing and deployment will also create employment in the domestic energy storage industry along with long-term skilled employment in operation, maintenance, and grid management across participating states, the press release said. End
