NEW DELHI/MUMBAI – Investments by scheduled commercial banks picked up pace in the first half of September in the aftermath of a surge in deposits by the end of August, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India Wednesday. Investments rose by INR 516.79 billion or 6.9% in the reporting fortnight to INR 73.15 trillion as of Sept. 15. As of Aug. 31, growth in banks' investments was 6.6%.

The rise in investments coincided with a sharp slump in deposits in the first half of September as the impact of foreign currency non-resident (banks) deposits faded, data released by the central bank Friday showed. Deposits slipped by INR 2.49 trillion to INR 276.23 trillion as on Sept. 15, posting an on-year growth of 17.3%. Banks' deposits had risen by a whopping INR 9.4 trillion to INR 278.72 trillion in the second half of August, pushing up the year-on-year growth to 17.8%, a multi-year-high.

The RBI had in June announced special measures to attract foreign capital inflows to strengthen the rupee, including a facility to cover the full hedging cost for banks raising fresh three-to-five-year FCNR(B) deposits. Banks mobilised $133 billion through FCNR(B) deposits between Jun. 8 and Aug. 31, much higher than initial expectations.

Meanwhile, banks' loan growth eased to 18.1% on year as on Sept. 15, against 19.1% as on Aug. 31, Friday's data showed. In absolute terms, loans fell by INR 578.94 billion to INR 223.29 trillion in the latest fortnight, compared with a rise of INR 3.8 trillion in the previous fortnight. Banks' credit-deposit ratio as on Sept. 15 rose to 80.84% from 80.32% at August-end.
