NEW DELHI – Dry weather conditions are likely to prevail over many parts of northwest India, including Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi from Wednesday due to the absence of any weather system over the area, the India Meteorological Department said. However, scattered rains are expected over parts of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan till Wednesday, and intermittently over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand till Monday.
Dry weather conditions are also expected over many parts of central India, such as Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh from Friday. However, Chhattisgarh may receive scattered rains intermittently till Friday, the department said. Scattered rains are also likely in east India over Jharkhand till Friday, and Odisha, West Bengal and Sikkim are also expected to receive similar rains till Monday.
The southwest monsoon started retreating on Sept. 19, two days late from Rajasthan, and is expected to resume withdrawing from the mainland after a brief pause. The monsoon retreated from some parts of Haryana and Punjab and Delhi last week, but has been on a pause since Wednesday. As of Tuesday, the monsoon withdrawal current continued to pass through Chandigarh and Gurdaspur in Punjab, Muzaffarnagar and Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, Dholpur and Udaipur in Rajasthan, and Deesa and Naliya in Gujarat.
Typically, the southwest monsoon completes its withdrawal from India around Oct. 15. However, changing climate patterns have delayed the final retreat in recent years, private weather forecaster Skymet said. In 2026, the complete retreat is unlikely to go beyond Oct. 12, it added.
No significant rainfall is likely in the next 10 days, except over south and northeast India. Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are likely to receive heavy rains till Wednesday, and Arunachal Pradesh from Friday to Sunday. Heavy rainfall is expected over Tamil Nadu till Thursday, in parts of Karnataka till Friday, and Kerala from Wednesday to Saturday. End
