MUMBAI – Benchmark stock indices ended lower Tuesday due to negative sentiment around crude oil prices and elevated US bond yields. The Nifty 50, which opened sharply lower, saw some volatility due to expiry of monthly futures and options contracts, along with a major reshuffle as part of the semi-annual review. Index heavyweights and information technology shares were the major laggards in the indices. Meanwhile, pharmaceutical companies ended higher and provided some relief to a tepid market.

The Nifty 50 ended 0.3% lower at 22716.20, down 64.05 points. The BSE Sensex ended 0.3% lower at 72529.07, down 242.65 points. Post the continuous trading session, the Nifty 50 was at 22683.75, down 0.4%. The Nifty 50 saw a large swing during the closing auction session. At 1521 IST, the indicative close for the Nifty 50 showed the index down nearly 3%. On Tuesday, NSE's closing auction turnover surged to INR 244.97 billion amid the Nifty indices rejig.

Wipro ended nearly 3% lower on its last day as a Nifty 50 constituent. The stock will be replaced by BSE in the Nifty 50. Shares of BSE ended over 3% higher. Shares of Cupid ended nearly 9% as the stock is set to make its entry into the Nifty Smallcap 250. Another major movement was in the shares of Apollo Tyres, which ended over 4% higher. The stock will cease to be a constituent in the Nifty Midcap 150. Shares of 3M India closed nearly 5% lower as the company will exit the Nifty Midcap 150 index as well. The revised changes in the indices will be effective Wednesday.

Adani group constituents were the top gainers in the Nifty 50. Adani Enterprises and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone ended 5% and 4% higher, respectively. Shares of Dr. Reddy's Laboratories ended nearly 3% higher in the index. Global brokerage Citi has upgraded the stock after three years. The brokerage raised the recommendation on the stock to 'buy' from 'sell' and raised the target price over 39% to INR 1,450. Its peer Sun Pharmaceutical Industries ended over 1% higher. Cipla's shares opened higher but later slipped into the red and ended 0.3% lower. The Nifty Pharma ended 0.7% higher and was the best performer among sectoral indices.

Pharmaceutical companies performed well in an overall weak market. Pharma players ended higher after the US exempted tariffs on certain specialty drugs and associated ingredients imported from India and used for treatment of rare medical conditions. Washington waived tariffs on drugs made in India and 19 other countries. Over half of the pharma constituents traded higher in an overall weak market. Indian pharmaceutical companies are expected to see traction in getting approvals from the US Food and Drug Administration for upcoming products post the tariffs exemption, according to Maitri Sheth, equity research analyst at Choice Institutional Equities. Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Lupin, and Zydus Lifesciences are the companies expected to benefit from the zero tariffs as they are major players in specialty drugs, Sheth added.

Wipro's IT peers in the Nifty 50 – HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, and Tata Consultancy Services – ended around 2% lower. Apollo Hospitals Enterprises, Bajaj Auto, Max Healthcare Institute, UltraTech Cement, Hindustan Unilever, Grasim Industries, and Mahindra & Mahindra ended around 2% lower in the index. In the Nifty 200, Adani Enterprises closed as the top gainer, up 5%. Pharmaceutical constituents in the Nifty 200 index – Glenmark Pharmaceuticals and Mankind Pharma - ended nearly 5% and over 4% higher, respectively.

On the other hand, shares of PB Fintech ended lower for the fourth consecutive session. The stock shed nearly 43% during the period. The stock has taken a beating since the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority last week proposed to trim commission for insurance products, which has spurred concerns over PB Fintech's business prospects.

Broader market indices fell more than their peers. Mid-cap indices ended around 1% lower each, and small-cap indices closed 0.7-0.8% lower. "Domestic equities continue to face correction-led headwinds amid volatile crude prices, US Treasury yields hovering near two-decade highs, and persistent FII outflows exerting pressure on the rupee," Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said in a note.
