NEW DELHI – Switzerland sees significant opportunities in India for portfolio diversification and investment, Ambassador Pietro Lazzeri. He also sought India's support in finalising the bilateral investment pact between the countries, the finance ministry said in a social media post on X late Monday.
"Swiss Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) growth in India is outpacing global FDI, and sought support for finalisation of the Bilateral Investment Protection Agreement," Lazzeri said, quoting the finance ministry. The ambassador, who is also the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank Governor from Switzerland, made these comments during his interaction with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on the sidelines of the AIIB 2026 annual meeting in Doha, Qatar, Monday. Sitharaman is attending the two-day 11th Annual Meeting of Board of Governors of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.
She highlighted the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund as a "trusted partner for foreign investors seeking to access opportunities in India, with high standards of governance and transparency," the ministry said. The minister also suggested that the Swiss investors could "explore NIIF infrastructure funds to gain exposure to India's infrastructure sector."
Further, Ambassador Lazzeri expressed an interest in cooperation in the financial sector and sustainable finance. To which, Sitharaman also said Swiss investors and financial services entities could explore investment opportunities in India's homegrown financial services centre in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City International Financial Services Centre. The centre offers "financial services and products, tax benefits and a business-friendly environment," the minister said.
Lazzeri also mentioned his upcoming State Visit to India and the 2nd India-EFTA Prosperity Summit in New Delhi. The event, which will be held on Oct. 7, will see Heads of State, Ministers, senior government officials and leading business leaders from India and the European Free Trade Association States – Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland – reviewing the progress, deepen collaboration and announce the next round of investments.
