NEW DELHI – India received 1.4 millimetres of rainfall Monday, 64?low the normal of 3.8 millimetres, data from the India Meteorological Department showed. During Jun. 1-Sept. 28, India recorded 757 millimetres of rain, 12?low normal levels, the data showed.

Of the four homogeneous regions in the country, three received "largely deficient" rains Monday, and one received "large excess" rains. Northwest India received 3.6 millimetres of rainfall, 179?ove normal, as very heavy rainfall over Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and west Uttar Pradesh more than offset weak rains over Punjab and east Uttar Pradesh.

However, there was no rainfall in Punjab, and rains were scanty in east Uttar Pradesh.

Many parts of northwest India, particularly over Uttarakhand and north Uttar Pradesh, have been receiving extremely heavy rains in the past few days under the influence of a depression lying over northeast Madhya Pradesh and adjoining north Chhattisgarh on Saturday. As of Monday, the depression is lying over coastal areas of Myanmar and its neighbourhood.

Monday, central India received negligible amount of rainfall, 99?low the normal of 3.4 millimetres. Gujarat and Saurashtra regions received no rainfall, against a normal of 3 millimetres and 2.8 millimetres. Most areas in the region received little rainfall.

The southern peninsula region received 0.3 millimetres of rainfall, 95?low the normal of 5.2 millimetres. Coastal Karnataka received no rainfall, whereas it would normally receive 7.2 millimetres of rainfall.

In the east and northeast region, rainfall was 86?low normal levels at 1.1 millimetres, against a normal of 7.8 millimetres. Bihar received 0.5 millimetres of rain, 92?low the normal of 6.3 millimetres. Gangetic West Bengal received 0.1 millimetres of rain, against a normal of 6.7 millimetres.

Of the 36 sub-divisions, 25 received a largely deficient amount of rainfall. Six sub-divisions received a large excess of rainfall, three received no rainfall, and two received a deficient amount of rainfall.   End
