--Tata Motors PV extends battery-as-a-service across EV portfolio
MUMBAI – Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. Monday said it is expanding the option to buy its electric cars under a battery-as-a-service contract across its entire portfolio. Currently, this is available only for entry-level electric cars such as Tiago and Punch. The company will extend this offer to the Nexon, Curvv, Sierra, and Harrier as well, it said in a press release.
"As BaaS (battery-as-a-service) becomes an increasingly visible construct in the EV market, we want to ensure that customers evaluating a TATA.ev have complete flexibility to make a fair and transparent comparison. Extending BaaS across our portfolio gives them precisely that choice," Vivek Srivatsa, the company's chief commercial officer, said in a statement.
The electric Tiago's price under the battery-as-a-service model starts at INR 469,000, against INR 699,000 for the regular model. The Nexon is priced at INR 899,000 under the new financing model, versus INR 1.43 million normally, while the Curvv starts at INR 1.10 million versus INR 1.72 million. The Sierra is priced at INR 1.12 million under the battery leasing model, against INR 1.88 million normally, while the Harrier starts at INR 1.45 million versus INR 2.18 million.
The prices of all these models are only starting prices. Customers will incur additional prices for using the battery. These prices are only for personal users and exclude all statutory levies such as road tax, insurance, and other government levies.
Buying electric cars under battery-as-a-service option cuts upfront costs for purchasing vehicles by 30-40%, as per some industry estimates. Customers pay a recurring monthly or per-kilometre fee to service providers. This is crucial at a time when demand for electric passenger vehicles has seen a marked increase, especially after the war broke out in West Asia, which prompted multiple fuel price hikes. Tata Motors PV, a market leader in the segment, has seen higher inquiries at dealerships as a result.
Tata Motors PV had reported a consolidated net profit of INR 7.75 billion on revenue of INR 957.99 billion for the June quarter. On Monday, its shares ended around 3% lower at INR 281.75 on the National Stock Exchange. End
