MUMBAI – Higher crude oil prices pulled the equity markets down Monday with banking stocks contributing substantially to the fall. Heavyweights in the benchmark Nifty 50 index also fell as the index closed below 22800 points for the first time since April, touching a five-month low. The broader market indices fell at the same pace as their benchmark peers.

The Nifty 50 ended 1.6% lower at 22780.25, down 360.25 points. The BSE Sensex closed 1.5% lower at 72771.72, down 1124.02 points. Only three stocks in the Nifty 50 ended higher. Dr. Reddy's Laboratories was the only one to close with major gains. The pharmaceutical major ended nearly 2% higher. Information technology behemoth Infosys ended 0.3% higher. HDFC Life Insurance Co. ended marginally higher.

Nomura maintained its "buy" recommendation on Dr. Reddy's after the company's management said it was constructive on the biosimilars space over the medium-to-long term and remained hopeful of receiving clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration for its biologics plant in Telangana and approval for the biosimilar Abatacept.

Banking stocks were among the major laggards in the indices. The Nifty PSU Bank ended over 3% lower and the Nifty Bank closed 2% lower. Most of the constituents of these indices ended in the red. Analysts said the possibility of an interest rate hike by the Reserve Bank of India led to negative sentiment in the stocks. The RBI's Monetary Policy Committee is scheduled to meet next week. Nomura expects the panel to raise the repo rate by 25 basis points each in October and December to 5.75%, terming the likely policy action a "recalibration" rather than the start of a prolonged tightening cycle.

Heavyweights ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank ended around 2% lower. State Bank of India and Axis Bank ended 2% and 1% lower, respectively. Financial services stocks Jio Financial Services, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, Shriram Finance, SBI Life Insurance Co., and Kotak Mahindra Bank ended 1-3% lower. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles was the worst hit on the Nifty 50, down 3%. Shares of the Safari-maker were down for the third consecutive session. They have fallen over 6% in this period.

The broader market indices ended sharply lower as well. The mid-cap indices ended 1.5-1.6% lower and small-cap indices ended 1.6-1.9% lower. All the sectoral indices bled as well. After the Nifty PSU Bank, Nifty Realty fell the most, down over 2%. Nifty IT was better off, closing only 0.3% lower. "The US rejection of the ceasefire proposal (from Iran) has heightened concerns that tensions in West Asia could persist for longer than anticipated, reducing the likelihood of a near-term diplomatic resolution and increasing the risk of prolonged supply-side disruptions and higher commodity prices," Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said in note.

Adani Enterprises, Power Grid Corp. of India, Larsen & Toubro, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone, Oil and Natural Gas Corp., Bajaj Auto, and Hindalco Industries ended 2-3% lower. Fast-moving consumer goods companies Hindustan Unilever, Tata Consumer Products, Nestle India, and ITC ended 1-2% lower.

In sector-specific movement, shares of consumer durable companies ended higher. Multiple brokerages said consumer durable companies are set to increase prices of air conditioners, television sets, washing machines, and other products by 5–8% from Thursday. This is to offset the sustained increase in key input costs, including of copper, aluminium, steel, and crude oil derivatives, along with higher freight costs and currency volatility. Shares of Dixon Technologies (India), Voltas, and Blue Star closed 1-2% higher. Amber Enterprises and LG Electronics India ended with marginal gains.

In the Nifty 200 index, YES Bank, Bank of India, Union Bank of India, and IDFC First Bank ended 4–5% lower. Vodafone Idea closed nearly 6% lower. Meanwhile, in the Nifty 500, Manappuram Finance ended over 6% lower and was the worst-hit stock in the index. It fell after rising for four sessions during which period it gained nearly 6%. Shares of the gold loan financier fell amid a fall in gold prices. At 1616 IST, the October futures contract of gold on COMEX were down over 3% at $4,154.8 per ounce.
