KOLKATA - Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Monday said the government has so far successfully navigated crude and natural gas disruptions caused by the blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, and that even as the global situation remains volatile, the government will not let things get out of control.
After the US and Israel attacked Iran, the Strait of Hormuz was first blocked by Iran and then by the US, disrupting global crude supply lines. "I would say we have insulated ourselves from the turbulence, but going forward also constitutes a challenge," Puri said at an event organised by the Merchant Chamber of Commerce and Industry. "But I can assure you, we won't let things get out of control."
Puri said India's three major energy suppliers - Qatar, UAE, and Saudi Arabia – are in the conflict-affected region. However, India has diversified its energy sourcing to 41 countries, up from 27.
The minister said 40% of the global crude shipments pass through the Strait of Hormuz, and even if India tries to reroute its shipments through the Red Sea, the Houthis might attack shipping in the sea.
The minister said the Galvanising Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan scheme will launch on Oct. 1. The Union Cabinet approved the scheme last month with an outlay of INR 237.31 billion over 10 years. It aims to convert organic waste, including animal waste, crop residue, kitchen waste, and market waste into compressed biogas and bio-slurry, increasing domestic compressed biogas production nearly ten-fold and promoting a circular bioeconomy.
