NEW DELHI – The area under various kharif crops so far declined 1.2% on year to 110.8 million hectares, according to data from the agriculture ministry. Kharif acreage declined mainly because sowing of paddy, maize, and moong remained below year-ago levels. However, the kharif sowing remains above the normal area of 110.45 million hectares.

The area under paddy, the largest kharif crop, declined nearly 4% on year to 43.1 million hectares, while the area under maize fell 2% on year to 9.3 million hectares, the data showed.

Total pulses acreage rose nearly 2% on year to 12.1 million hectares, as increased area in tur and urad offset a fall in moong. Moong acreage fell nearly 4% on year to 3.4 million hectares, but urad acreage rose over 12% to 2.6 million hectares, and tur area rose nearly 3% to 4.7 million hectares, data showed.

Total oilseed acreage was largely flat on year at 19.5 million hectares, as the fall in soybean area was offset by higher sowing in sunflower and sesamum. The area under soybean, the largest kharif oilseed crop, declined 0.7% on year to 12.2 million hectares. Groundnut acreage was largely flat on year at 5.1 million hectares. Sunflower area rose 85% on year to 129,000 hectares, and sesamum area increased over 13% on year to 1.1 million hectares.

Among cash crops, the area under jute and mesta was nearly 2% higher on year at 640,000 hectares. Sugarcane acreage was down 0.6% on year at 5.8 million hectares. Cotton acreage was 11.0 million hectares, down nearly 1% on year.
