NEW DELHI – India's foreign exchange reserves were at a three-week low of $765.90 billion as of Sept. 18, data released by the Reserve Bank of India Friday showed. The reserves fell by $14.88 billion during the week, the sharpest fall since November 2024.
The fall in reserves was mainly led by a $14.82-billion on-week decline in foreign currency assets at $630.98 billion as of Sept. 18. The value of the central bank's gold holdings rose by $68 million on week to $111.29 billion as of Sept. 18.
The reserves had hit an all-time high of $785.71 billion in the week ended Sept. 4 with the help of a sharp rise in capital inflows under the Reserve Bank of India's swap schemes. Following this, the Reserve Bank of India is likely to have conducted dollar-rupee sell-buy swaps in the foreign exchange market in order to drain surplus rupee liquidity from the banking system in the week ended Sept. 18. The rupee fell 0.3% against the dollar during the week.
Calculated in dollar terms, the RBI's foreign exchange reserves also reflect the impact of the appreciation or depreciation of currencies other than the dollar, such as the euro, the pound sterling, and the yen, which the central bank holds. End
