MUMBAI – The benchmark indices ended higher after a volatile run Thursday, supported by banking stocks. Technical analysts said call writers covered their short positions ahead of the weekend. Crude oil prices continued to be above $105 per barrel, weighing on sentiment. On a weekly basis, the indices ended lower for the seventh consecutive week.

The Nifty 50 ended 0.3% higher at 23140.50, up 77.40 points. The BSE Sensex closed 0.4% higher at 73895.74 points. The 23000-mark has been acting as a strong support for the Nifty 50, according to technical analysts. "The ability of benchmark indices to sustain above the psychologically important 23,000 level reflects domestic resilience and support from strong domestic liquidity," Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said in a note.

Axis Bank was the pick of the Nifty 50 constituents, up 3%. Heavyweight HDFC Bank ended nearly 1% higher, lending support to the 50-stock index. Bajaj Finance ended nearly 1.5% higher. Automobile stocks Mahindra & Mahindra and Bajaj Auto ended nearly 2% and 1% higher, respectively. Shares of Asian Paints, InterGlobe Aviation, Power Grid Corp. of India, HCL Technologies, UltraTech Cement, and Titan Co. ended 1-2% higher. On the other hand, Max Healthcare Institute ended as the worst performer in the Nifty 50, down 3%. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Oil and Natural Gas Corp., and Infosys ended nearly 2% lower and were also the major laggards in the benchmark index.

Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Private Bank and Nifty Financial Services ended 0.5% higher. Shares of banks and financial services rose after Thursday's sharp fall which was triggered by a consultation paper from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India proposing to cap commissions and management expenses. The broader market indices ended mixed. The Nifty Midcap indices closed slightly lower while the Nifty Smallcap indices closed flat to 0.4% higher.

Among individual stocks, shares of Fortis Healthcare ended nearly 5% lower and were the worst hit in the Nifty 200. The shares fell after the Supreme Court rejected an appeal filed by the company against a Delhi High Court order of Aug. 31 to appoint a forensic auditor to investigate the transactions among the company's former promoters Malvinder Singh and Shivinder Singh, their companies, and the Religare group.

PB Fintech ended over 3% lower as brokerages said the company's earnings will see a heavy impact from IRDAI's proposed commission limits. Thursday, the stock had hit its lower circuit at multiple levels. The company, in an investor call after market hours Thursday, said the changes in commission norms could result in a 30% hit to its core online insurance revenue for the financial year 2027-28 (Apr-Mar), brokerages noted in reports. On the other hand, Max Financial Services ended over 3% higher after plummeting 10% Thursday due to the insurance regulator's proposed norms.

In the Nifty 500 space, Whirlpool of India ended nearly 8% higher and was the top gainer. The shares rose after falling 6% Thursday. Wednesday, the stock had hit its 20% upper circuit on a media report saying promoter Whirlpool Mauritius was going to sell its entire 39.76% stake in the company. The company later denied the report.

Welspun Corp. ended over 5% higher after its wholly-owned US subsidiary, Welspun Tubular LLC., received a $412.5-million order to supply induction welded pipes. It is the largest order in Welspun Corp.'s history in terms of volume, duration, and value, the company said.

On the other hand, Ola Electric Mobility ended nearly 10% lower and was the worst hit in the index. The stock fell after rising for four consecutive sessions during which it gained nearly 17%. Hero Motors, the stock that made its market debut Wednesday, hit the 20% upper circuit and ended at INR 141.69 per share.
