NEW DELHI – Under the influence of a depression lying over south Chhattisgarh and adjoining south interior Odisha, extremely heavy rains are likely over Chhattisgarh and east Madhya Pradesh, as well as West Bengal and Sikkim Friday. Similar heavy rains are also likely over parts of Uttar Pradesh till Saturday and Uttarakhand during the weekend, the India Meteorological Department said.
The low-pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal Saturday had transformed into a deep depression Tuesday and hit mainland India on the east coast late Wednesday. This brought extremely heavy rains along with strong winds gusting to 75 kilometres per hour over coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and adjoining areas through Thursday.
The deep depression has weakened to a depression Friday and now lies over south Chhattisgarh and adjoining south interior Odisha. The depression is likely to maintain its intensity and move northwestwards in the next 12 hours and weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area during the subsequent 12 hours, the weather department said.
Meanwhile, the retreat of the southwest monsoon has been on a pause since Monday. The southwest monsoon started retreating from parts of west Rajasthan on Sept. 19, against the normal date of Sept. 17. As of Friday, the monsoon withdrawal current continues to pass through Chandigarh and Gurdaspur in Punjab, Muzaffarnagar and Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, Dholpur and Udaipur in Rajasthan, and Deesa and Naliya in Gujarat.
The weather department, in its extended range forecast released Thursday, said conditions would be favourable for a further progress of monsoon withdrawal between Oct. 1 and Oct. 7.
Meanwhile, very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Madhya Pradesh till Saturday and Himachal Pradesh till Sunday. Most of east India, including Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and parts of West Bengal, is likely to receive heavy rainfall till Saturday. In South India, heavy rains are likely over Kerala and some parts of Karnataka till the month-end.
The weather department has issued warnings for winds gusting to 60-65 kmph over Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coast as well as Chhattisgarh and interior Odisha Friday. The squally wind is likely to decrease in speed from Saturday. Rough sea conditions are likely to remain along and off the north Andhra Pradesh-Odisha-West Bengal coasts till Friday and improve gradually thereafter, the department said. End
