MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon has withdrawn from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, most parts of Rajasthan, and some parts of Gujarat and west Uttar Pradesh. The formation of a weather system over the Bay of Bengal, which eventually intensified into a deep depression and moved inland, is likely to cause widespread heavy rainfall over parts of east and central India. This weather activity is likely to bring monsoon withdrawal to a pause till around Oct. 2, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said.
The deep depression, acting as a storm, has entered deep inland over Andhra Pradesh. The weather system will weaken and move over Chhattisgarh and parts of east Madhya Pradesh, the weather agency said. Later, the remnants of the system will travel over Uttar Pradesh and its adjoining parts. Under its influence, heavy rainfall is likely over Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh in the next four days, albeit in a staggered manner.
The peripheral regions of Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Telangana, Vidarbha, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal will also have rain and thundershower activity, the agency said. The spell of heavy showers will also reach Uttarakhand and the foothills of west Uttar Pradesh. Sporadic showers are also expected over the plains of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi, even though the monsoon has retreated from most of these regions.
The declaration of withdrawal depends on the fulfilment of certain criteria, which include the absence of rainfall over the given region for at least a few consecutive days. As such, the presence of the deep depression and a western disturbance moving across the mountains of north India is expected to lead to heavy showers, preventing the further withdrawal of monsoon.
By the end of September, the monsoon typically withdraws from Saurashtra, Kutch, north Gujarat, entire Rajasthan, northwest Madhya Pradesh, west Uttar Pradesh, and all the hilly states of north India, the weather agency said. While monsoon may retreat from some parts of the hilly areas, any further withdrawal from the plains will be on hold.
An anticyclonic circulation is likely to form over the northern plains of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Delhi around Oct. 2. This is likely to influence the resumption of monsoon withdrawal and the retreat may pick up pace rapidly in the subsequent one week. Monsoon is likely to exit from central and east India entirely by Oct. 10, the agency said. End
