NEW DELHI – Rahul Gandhi, senior Congress leader and leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Thursday said Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar must resign immediately. He also said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah will be investigated for election fraud. He said Kumar's actions tied to the "special intensive revision" of electoral rolls across the country were directed by the prime minister and the home minister who are also protecting the poll panel chief.

Gandhi addressed a press conference at the Congress headquarters here a day after an investigative report by the Indian Express newspaper claimed that many of the decisions pertaining to the special intensive revision were taken without the knowledge of two of the three election commissioners, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, who also formally recorded their objections at least 14 times over the past 10 months.

"Gyanesh Kumar should understand that his two juniors have done a very good job," Gandhi said. "In a way, they have accepted that the elections are being stolen. This is a crime." He added that Kumar should turn approver in connection with the election misdeeds.

The Congress leader claimed that votes in India are being stolen through both tampering of electronic voting machines and revision of voter rolls. He stressed that he has been repeatedly claiming with evidence that votes in Indian elections are being stolen.

Gandhi claimed to have knowledge that the Election Commission of India internally agrees that the institution has lost control over the country's voter rolls. According to him, Kumar's actions are an attack on the Constitution and the country's legal structure. "The prime minister and the home minister of this country have attacked and destroyed its democratic architecture," he later added.

Gandhi stressed that when votes are stolen, laws enacted by such legislators become illegal and the Constitution loses its power. He added that elections in India are fundamentally broken and so is the chain between vote, law, Constitution, and institution. "There is no connection between the vote and the Constitution," the former Congress president said. "There is no connection between the vote and the institutions because the vote has been destroyed. So we cannot believe anything the Election Commission says."

The leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha said all opposition parties in India agree that votes are being stolen in elections. "It is very clear that this is the single biggest issue in front of our democracy," he said. "We are going to cooperate. We will cooperate with the (other) opposition (parties)."

Gandhi warned that the country is heading to a place where people will stop believing election results. "People do not believe that elections in India are legitimate... even if BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) wins, it is a sacred belief that people of India believe in the vote. That belief is dying. And that belief has to be revived immediately."  End
