KOLKATA – Adani Group Founder and Chairman Gautam Adani Thursday said his group was targeting to invest over INR 1 trillion in West Bengal by 2035 across various infrastructure projects.
"(West) Bengal is in the best position to connect with the maritime trade routes deep into South-East Asia and beyond. This gives Bengal a structural advantage (which) few regions can match, and the potential to become not just a gateway, but also one of Asia's greatest integrated industrial and economic platforms. And when this platform connects and expands, something powerful happens in and around Bengal," Adani said during the groundbreaking ceremony of Adani Arogya Mandir at New Town near Kolkata.
Adani said that the group will invest INR 1 trillion in the state spanning across sector including ports, logistics, power generation, power transmission and distribution, roads, bridges, ropeways, green cemeteries and hyperscale data centres.
"Strengthened logistics attracts industries, industries driving manufacturing, manufacturing needs energy, energy enables digital infrastructure, and digital infrastructure brings in the industries of the future. And most importantly, jobs multiply," Adani said in his address.
Kickstarting his investment target, the Adani group laid the foundation of Adani Arogya Mandir near Kolkata and signed a memorandum of understanding with the state government.
The Adani Arogya Mandir, where the group is investing around INR 40 billion, will have 2,000 beds of which, 1,000 beds will be reserved for patients covered under state and central health insurance schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.
"For me, Bengal is not simply an investment destination. It is a place where I want to build, to serve, and most importantly, to belong," Adani said adding that the group was looking at West Bengal as its "karmabhoomi" in the east. Adani said the group currently has its sole "karmabhoomi" in Gujarat.
Besides, the Adani group also signed memorandum of understanding with the state government over restoration of the Writers' Building, a heritage building and former state secretariat, and also restoration of Kumartuli Ghat which will showcase the heritage of Durga Puja in the state.
Under the BJP rule, the state government plans to shift back the secretariat to the historic Writers' Building from the current secretariat in the Howrah district and is currently restoring the building. Despite Kolkata being the capital of West Bengal, currently the state secretariat is located at Howrah district in the state and not in the state's capital. End
